Das Breakout-Board ermöglicht den Betrieb von bis zu 6 Schrittmotor- oder Servoendstufen am UC400ETHHierfür kommt die Steuersoftware Mach3/UCCNC (nicht im Lieferumfang) zum Einsatz. Das Board besitzt verschiedene Eingänge und Ausgänge die individuell eingestellt werden können da viele unterschiedliche Konfigurationen möglich sind. Je nach gewählter Konfiguration stehen zusätzliche Funktionen wie Ansteuerung eines Frequenzumrichters über ein analoges Signal von 0-10V, Referenzschalter, Spindelrichtungsrelais, bis zu 2 Relaisausgänge und ein Chargepump zur Verfügung. Die Steuerung erzeugt Impulse mit einer Frequenz von bis zu 4 MHz, verfügt über 34 I/O-Ports und kann bis zu 6 Achsen steuern.Neuere PC haben keinen Parallelport mehr, bestehende Steuerungen mit dieser Schnittstelle sind oft nicht mehr an modernen PC verwendbar. Die ESS dient als Bindeglied zwischen PC und Parallelport-Steuerung. Man schließt die ESS über Flachbandkabel (nicht im Lieferumfang) an den Parallelport der bestehenden Steuerung an und kann dann weiter mit Mach3 oder Mach4 arbeiten. Der große Vorteil ist, dass auf der ESS selbst die Motorsignale erzeugt werden, nicht mehr auf dem PC selbst. Dadurch ist ein sehr störungsfreier und stabiler Betrieb möglich.
